BASIC FUNCTION:

 

To use leadership, instructional, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote educational development of each student.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Instructional Leadership 

  • Facilitates the development of programs and monitors implementation of curriculum that meet the needs of all students.
  • Analyzes and utilizes all pertinent data for the improvement of curriculum and instruction.
  • Maintains a positive school-wide climate and promotes organization for learning (high expectations, collaboration, cooperation, support, positive attitudes, etc.)
  • Facilitates the development of curriculum and/or instructional programs utilizing research based resources, and utilizes assessment results to guide necessary instructional changes.
  • Identifies and communicates effective teaching strategies, classroom management strategies, and strategies for positively molding pupil behaviors.
  • Incorporates computer and other technology into the management and instructional processes.
  • Provides on-going technical assistance to teachers.
  • Works with special educators in leading the building ARC and in implementing the IEP for special education students to appropriately modify instruction, services, and expectations for students referred for special education placement.
  • Chairs the school site-based council.

Program Planning 

  • Identifies and communicates effective instructional planning and strategies.
  • Determines priorities based on assessed needs, sound research theories, financial capabilities, time, expertise, time lines, and resources.
  • Develops the School Improvement Plan encompassing goals, objectives, activities, timeline-lines, and resources.
  • Develops, in the collaboration with stakeholders, the school Professional Development Plan.
  • Monitors the implementation of programs/services through a focused, systematic design.
  • Supervises the ongoing evaluation and the adjustment of curriculum/instructional programs as needed.
  • Supervises the guidance program to enhance individual student opportunity and development.
  • Utilizes staff in curriculum and instructional development and improvement.
  • Organizes for maximum time for academic learning.
  • Plans, organizes and directs implementation of all school activities.
  • Develops schedules for teachers and students that will provide for the effective and efficient operation of the school and promotes in a high level of student expectations and learning.
  • Develops schedules for classroom observations, conferences and follow-up activities as required or needed.
  • Works with the Athletic Director in coordinating the athletic program. Maintains the program in conjunction with all rules and regulations of the K.H.S.A.A.

 School Management

  • Utilizes effective interview and selection processes to select the best candidate for open positions.
  • Assigns personnel to positions which ensure optimum performance and success.
  • Systematically evaluates the performance of personnel to improve competencies.
  • Plans and conducts staff development activities to improve competencies of school personnel.
  • Utilizes strategies which lead to a higher level of motivation and morale for all employees.
  • Organizes and supervises support service personnel for optimum performance.
  • Facilitates a positive school climate and culture that impacts constructive faculty and staff attitudes.
  • Conducts classified and certified staff meetings as needed to keep employees informed of policy changes, new programs, related concerns, etc..
  • Regularly rewards faculty, staff, and students for quality work.
  • Establishes the guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline according to board of education and SBDM policy.
  • Strictly follows due process procedures required by law in the management of school employees and students.
  • Prepares and supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school administration, attendance, and reporting student progress.
  • Plans and supervises required fire drills, earthquake drills, etc., and emergency preparedness programs.
  • Coordinates planning and work of the High School administrative staff.
  • Delegates responsibility for certain tasks to assistant principals and counselors as appropriate.
  • Coordinates curriculum development activities of the school in cooperation with the Supervisor of Instruction and/or Superintendent.

 Community Relations 

  • Involves parents and community stakeholders in the activities of the school.
  • Assesses community expectations and perceptions of school performance.
  • Communicates with citizenry by a variety of means (i.e., media, newsletters, and meetings.)
  • Utilizes community resources to support programs and services including parent volunteers.
  • Conducts regular student and parent advisory committee meetings.
  • Accommodates appropriate requests to use school facilities.
  • Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs.
  • Works with community leaders, other schools, and organizations in a professional manner.

 Business Management

  • Maintains a sound fiscal accountability system that ensures the best use of school funds.
  • Develops and monitors financial plans (budget) based on programs/service priorities and financial capabilities.
  • Organizes and involves teaching staff in monitoring and developing a financial plan for instructional needs.
  • Inspects building and grounds on a daily basis in order to manage the maintenance of the facility and reports maintenance needs to the Director of Maintenance.
  • Utilizes a system for purchasing and inventory control (i.e. textbooks).
  • Manages financial resources in a most cost-effective manner.
  • Applies local and state school board regulations to business management decisions.

 Interpersonal Relationships

  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Manages new programs by utilizing effective change and pacing strategies.
  • Solves problems utilizing a variety of techniques.
  • Makes solid decisions based on accurate and factual information.
  • Utilizes a process for involving personnel in decision making activities, including faculty meetings, grade or department meetings, etc.
  • Facilitates discussions and decision making sessions efficiently and productively.
  • Plans and facilitates meetings for optimum use of time and resources.
  • Manages situations involving conflict in an effective manner.
  • Is an effective listener and communicator.
  • Keeps the Superintendent informed of the schools’ activities and potential problems or concerns.
  • Refrains from participating in rumors, myths, and gossip of any kind.

 Professional Development

  • Attends workshops, institutes, courses, and conferences relevant to continuing professional development, and managing the school programs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current professional literature and materials including current, effective school related research related to teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrates effective time management practices to complete the required work load.
  • Reacts to stressful situations in a reasonably calm and positive manner.
  • Meets timelines and deadlines as requested/required.
  • Conducts self and administrative office in an organized and business-like manner.
  • Exhibits dependability in carrying out assigned responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Holds valid Kentucky certification for High School Principal.

 

 

FOR THIS TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT, STATE LAW REQUIRES A NATIONAL (FBI) AND STATE (KSP) FINGERPRINT SUPPORTED CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND CHECK PLUS A LETTER FROM THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES STATING THE EMPLOYEE IS CLEAR TO HIRE BASED ON NO FINDINGS OF SUBSTANTIATED CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT FOUND THROUGH A BACKGROUND CHECK OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT (CAN) RECORDS MAINTAINED BY THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT. KRS 160.380

 

As a condition of initial employment, all employees shall pass a medical examination. The medical examination shall be reported on the form required by Kentucky Administrative Regulation available at the Board of Education office. The examination shall be provided by a licensed physician, physician assistant (PA), or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Each medical examination shall include a risk assessment for tuberculosis as required by Kentucky Administrative Regulation. Individuals identified by that assessment as being at high risk for TB shall be required to undergo a tuberculin skin test. 702 KAR 001:160

 

All applicants being considered for employment shall be required to submit to a urinalysis test for the detection of illegal use of drugs and alcohol. An applicant refusing to complete any part of the drug testing procedure will not be considered a valid candidate for employment with the District, and such will be considered as a withdrawal of the individual’s application for employment. If substance screening shows a confirmed positive result for which there is no current physician’s prescription, a second confirming test may be requested by the HRC. If the first or any requested second confirming test is positive, any current job offer will be revoked. The applicant will not be permitted to reapply for employment with the District for at least twelve (12) months and not until the applicant shows proof of successful completion of a drug rehabilitation program or proof that the applicant is no longer engaging in illegal drug use. As a condition of initial employment, all employees shall complete training for the use of physical restraint and seclusion in school districts. 704 KAR 7:160
